Raspberry Pi 5.

Ubuntu Server 20.04.5 LTS (64-bit), perhaps unsurprisingly, doesn't boot.

Raspberry Pi OS does, but I can't install Snakeoil OS. See below:

I wish the pi version can be an .img file for us to burn.  And then after bootup we can change the id and password immediately...... then it's perfect! Big Grin

Absolutely. That would lower the bar to newcomers and those scared off by the Terminal. SO would be as easy to install as any other audiophile OS for the RPi.

But Ubuntu 23.10 reportedly does run. As soon as I have some more time, I'll try SO Alpha 2 on 23.10. It's only time, 'innit?

Edit: Couldn't wait. See below:

So that's it for the moment. RPi 5 won't play with SO  [Image: hate.gif]

SnakeOil used to have an install like that, but it was a nightmare to maintain kernel updates, drivers etc. for 3 hardware platforms. By using Ubuntu as the base, AK can focus on SnakeOil.

Are both of you suggesting dropping 2 hardware platforms and making SnakeOil Pi only? That is the only way we will get an install image.

If a user is scared of terminal, they should not be using Linux..

What's the point for this post?  Asking new and old supporters to leave SO, right?

As you know AK does not have the time to support SnakeOil, but you did ask for an image install. This requires building and maintaining a Pi instance. What I am saying is that the only way he can do that is to drop the other platforms.

Note that I have no issues with the new streamlined install.

I can't comment on the issues of maintaining - surely it's two platforms, x86 and 64-bit RPi - but I'm not suggesting dropping x86 at all. I know a lot of people use x86 for SO, and I will try it sometime.

So, people must give up their Android phones, Macs (I know that's Free BSD, but for this argument, it's the same thing) and anything else that runs on Linux?  Wink

Please have a read of this
https://www.snakeoil-os.net/wiki/Install..._Isolation
That is just a summary of the how SnakeOil evolved. but behind the scenes, there was lots of juggling and work.

AK could not keep going with his CD image previously (.img file). SnakeOil would not have survived this long without that change.

You could argue that if other developers could create the Pi image, why can't AK?  Other developers were dedicated to Pi but AK is not...

Right now with this new installer method it's just a one liner command for anyone to cut & paste. This is as easy as it gets.

There are inherent problems with Snakeoil providing ISOs and images. It's down to money and time. So while it may seem easier on your side, Who's paying for that ultimately? I am (+ 1 sponsor).

I'm personally down AUD $50 to $70 every month. Supplying multiple ISOs will add to those costs. High cost of living in Australia and lack of job security means I have to be prudent.

Maybe I should start a kick starter project to ask for funding? Or maybe I will do a coffee pledge.. Will think about this in.. stay tuned.

Times seem to be hard for everybody.. Looking at the the server prices right now, they're hardly worth it (Maybe things will sweeten come cyber monday?)
