 I think it is worth investigating updating the WIKIs and walk-throughs to include additional background information or update existing information to provide a whole-of-solution approach - particularly if we are to encourage people to get on board this wonderful software

Welcome to the SnakeOil family. 

That is indeed the next priority, now waiting for a technology change for the Wiki.  As soon as that is done, a number of us will update the Wiki and we will seek your feedback. 
 

I fear that the "barrier to entry" may be too high for rookies, and this is affecting uptake vs other options which are easier to install yet potentially offer less flexibility and inferior sound quality to Snakeoil.

Fully agree that it is harder to install SnakeOil on a Pi than others, even though it sounds much better.  The flexibility is both an asset and weakness.  There is the flexibility to enjoy music "your way" but it adds complexity and the requirement to have some technical know how.
