I'm thinking of just making a hard switch, i.e. switch to a new forum, and have people recreate accounts again to the new forum, and start everything from scratch. This is a good thing because effectively Snakeoil 1.4 is a restart.
I have this nagging feeling this forum software is also going the day of the dodo, the promised update may just never come.
What do you guys think?
Pros of hard switch:Cons of hard switch:
- New forum site is a lot easier to maintain/update. This will save me a lot of time with maintenance.
I suspect eventually this hard move will have to be made.. Just that I am kicking the can down the road for as long as I can (and harden the OS to prevent hacking attacks in the meantime).
- Going to lose some valuable content (e.g. peoples' showcases), tips/tricks etc
- Half of the SEO will be gone
Thoughts? @"Snoopy8" maybe add a poll to this so we can gauge sentiment? I'm more in line with a hard switch and restart the community.
Migrating to a different forum platform is horrible. My thought is that your time would be much better spent working on SO.
You could scrape this forum and host it as static HTML files and set up a new forum on a new platform. You'll lose some people as they won't be bothered to set up a new account, but the most active members will be sure to move on to the new one.
Provided you mirror the URL structure, you shouldn't lose much, if any, of your SEO juice (I'm an SEO by trade, so I know a bit about this
