VM or bootcamp?
#1
I have been offered a vintage MacBook Pro 11,1 which has 1tb nvme drive (3rd party) and 8gb ram. (Edit - I have an ethernet adapter)

I could set up VMware bare metal for snakeoil but AKs blog mentioned latency as a problem.

Bootcamp is an alternative, as Ubuntu is supported since 2018.

Bootcamp seems easier, as VMware is new to me.

But the article hints that it's got problems that make VMware a better choice.

Any thoughts?

Virtual machines is really good for experimentations. Since the RT kernel for the latest Snakeoil isn't ready yet I don't think latency is an issue per se. It does mean you may have to pay for a VMWare License, or is there a free edition?

The dual booting article may be out of date with 16.04, newer 20.04 may have better MacOS support, but you probably have to boot up a LiveCD and see how that goes. This is the ideal solution in theory, but as that article mentions, ultimately it all depends on the driver support.

Unsure which way to go to be honest, but if it's me, I will try a VM first, and if I am happy with the hardware, go all out with dual boot, and a custom RT kernel in the future.
