| Here you will find different kernel builds for you to try in your own setup. A kernel upgrade can address existing issues/bugs with your computer or audio hardware; it can also change your perception of the sound. Kernel “rolling” is more for the ‘tinkerer’ in you as doing this carries a certain degree of risk. It is impossible to test these kernels on every motherboard and audio equipment out there, as such, these kernels are provided with no guarantee or warranty. Use them at your own risk. The Snakeoil team is not responsible for any consequences from this kernel change. If the kernel is not booting up the computer properly, you can easily recover by connecting a keyboard and monitor to the machine and recover to the old kernel. Please refer to this section on the instructions to recover the operating system. While Snakeoil makes it easy for the audiophile to change kernels from the web pages, these kernels are not exclusive to snakeoil. The Linux kernel is free for use and open sourced. Included in all the downloads is a special file called the config file. If you are experienced in Linux but don’t want to use Snakeoil, you can still use the supplied config file and build your own boot kernel for your own use, or use the pre-built binaries. I am all for user contribution, but unfortunately we cannot accept user kernel binaries for security reasons. If you have a custom .config file and kernel mods which you think can benefit the Snakeoil community, please forward the .config and diffs to me so I can build the binary (your name will be credited in the version string). We encourage you to post your comments/reviews about these kernels. Especially the negative aspects so we can see what else can be tweaked further. Notes: kernel upgrade from the web pages will not work if you use Snakeoil via persistent USB. |
