Work In Progress: 1.4.4 - agent_kith - 17-Apr-2025

Working on next version of Snakeoil (1.4.4). The UX is kind of ancient to be honest, I might upgrade the WebApp to support material UI, which has a "switch" widget, and that widget just feels more logical than a checkbox.

As such it will be a on/off switch instead of a checkbox. When switched on, your Snakeoil OS will automatically attach the machine to your Pro subscription and enable the realtime kernel feature. The kernel will then show up in the list of kernels to boot from.

This is the improved UX when switching Snakeoil from stable vs experimental (i.e. every version discussed here).

Again I feel this can be improved with the use of Material UI. This is still work in progress - I think it's a good idea to have individual holds for each package (i.e. you can update Snakeoil WebApp without updating the players, or the other way round, or disable updates for both packages completely). This means you can still update the OS without updating Snakeoil, and what is more important - you can also update Snakeoil without updating the Ubuntu OS itself. <- I know what I am saying sounds confusing right now, hopefully I can work this out in the UI.

Test build is not released yet though as I want to add in more features before releasing it. So watch this space. Overall these changes will (or should) make it easier to tweak your Snakeoil PC to do exactly the way you want it.

Suggestions for 1 4.4 music players.
  • Rename Roon to Roon Server, in line with what they call it
  • Remove BubbleUPnP, Clementine, XMMS
  • Keep 2 or 3 versions of Squeezelite; V2 was most stable, fixed problems in SO 1.3 of other versions

Added tickets for roon and to remove clementine and XMMS.

Unsure about BubbleUPnP as I think some may still be using it? Problem is I don't have the metrics of what players people are using right now. I am thinking of adding anonymous metrics to track this. Knowing what players people are using will certainly save time and stop supporting players nobody is using.

  • Will work on this. Now that I have moved my primary listening rig to the latest (and greatest?) I have lost some warmth, will re-evaluate if switching SqueezeLite can fix that. Then I can remove v1.6.4, which is a custom build I have been using since inception. Big Grin

I was the originator of the BubbleUPnP Server request.  But I have since moved away from UPnP because of the security risks.  And there has not been a single question on it in the forum. So, assume safe to remove?

I suspect you are right in Squeezelite V2 being less warm than earlier versions?  I think that made my shift from MPD to LMS much easier...  So, maybe 3 versions, V2, most warm version plus something in the middle ?
