Snakeoil 1.4.3 (High End U3) - agent_kith - 04-Apr-2025

Introduction
There are potentially some breaking changes in this release. In this release I have split Players and Snakeoil into two separate Debian packages. This will reduce the file sizes from now and, which in turn saves storage space and also the monthly quota for the Snakeoil infrastructure.

Another big change is test releases have also moved to apt. In the Snakeoil page, you will see the new option:
   
You can switch between Experimental (above example) or stable. When you're in the Experimental tree, you will be prompted to update if there's a new experimental version. And equally so if there's an ever newer stable release, you will update to that new stable release. Nothing to worry about this for now as the experimental tree is empty right now.

Have done some tests. And although it works for me, things might not be so perfect on your end. If you have any problems with updating, follow these steps:
  1. Backup the Snakeoil database
  2. Uninstall and reinstall snakeoil
    Code:
    sudo apt remove snakeoil
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install snakeoil
  3. Restore the Snakeoil database.

Imporant Notes
  1. The experimental tree is available to activated members only. However, every Snakeoil build is available to download from the Git repository so you will not lose out even if you do not want to help support this project financially. 

Change Log
  • Fix problem where verbosity level isn't displayed correct in WebApp until API is restarted (#211)
  • Add a checkbox to install/remove snap (#210)
  • Investigate and fix another 503 error (API blocked by NAS mounting calls) (#209)
  • Investigate and fix roon install problems. (#208)
  • Create UI for activated members to switch to devel branch (#207)
  • Create auth repo for devel branch (activated members only) (#206)
  • Split music players into it's own debian package. Reducing the size of snakeoil package. (#205)
  • Add a check when running --diag to make sure it is running as the correct user (#204)
  • In debian postinst, do not restart/start the snakeoil API backend (#203)
  • Fix issue where process priorities are not applied when you click "Save" in players page. Also fixing cset issues. (#25)
  • Fix issue where cset shielded processes are not picked up correctly in the web app (#212)
  • Split music players into it's own debian package. Reducing the size of snakeoil package. (#205)

Known Issues
  • If you update Snakeoil from the WebApp, the console will display "Unknown Ticket" after a while. Future updates will no longer have this issue (fingers crossed).
  • 1.4.3 is not starting GUI players in VNC properly. This should be fixed in 1.4.3-2, please go to the "System" page and click on "Update OS" to pull the latest version. See this thread.

First Time Install or Upgrading From 1.4.1 or below
Snakeoil packages is now deployed to an apt repository. So you are using apt to install/uninstall/update Snakeoil for now. If you have installed Snakeoil outside of apt, please follow the instructions below to install Snakeoil. You only have to do this once.
How To Update
Update only works if you have moved to the Snakeoil apt repository. 
  • Go to the System page of the WebApp, and click on "Update OS"
  • Try again in a few hours if you do not see an update (as you may still be served old content from Cloudflare CDN).
  • Alternatively, you can ssh into your snakeoil machine and run:

So I spent the past 3 months working on Snakeoil, on my own dime. That sounds pretty cool but unfortunately I cannot do that any more as some stupid orange coloured dude lost me a lot of money in the markets.

Going to rest for 2 days and start to look for a job from Monday. There's still some minor cleanup to do - e.g. I need to update the headers in the forums to match other parts of the site. I am also thinking of creating a video update on how to install Snakeoil.

So unless there's a major bug, there will be no official stable releases until I find employment.

Past 3 months I focused on almost nothing but Snakeoil... Well this is not technically true, as I did pick up a lot of skills in the past 6 months - crowdsec, apt repository, Drupal and a lot more DevOps stuffs. But you know what I mean.

Next few months I will need to focus on myself. I doubt getting a new job (especially in Perth WA) is going to be easy as the Orange man utterly destroyed everything living out there. 

How you guys can help:
  • Support the project financially if possible. The Snakeoil infrastructure only costs about $100+ a month to run, and if some body do their part, it's going to make things a lot easier
  • Go to Youtube and follow me: Link
  • Go to blusky and follow me: Link
  • Talk to your friends and introduce them to Snakeoil. It's a lot easier to install Snakeoil now compared to before.
Goal is to have a big enough following to get enough revenues come in. With more money coming in for Snakeoil means I can better justify spending more time on this project. Base line is pretty low.

Also updated my primary listening rig to the latest and greatest snakeoil. From Ubuntu 16.04 all the way to 24.04 now. I'm still using a old RT kernel (4.4.9) though and yet to move to the official Ubuntu one. So far so good, Snakeoil is still on the right track but I need to find a different kernel now as I have lost the "warmth" with the OS update...

Thanks a lot, AK.  I just upgraded my SO.  

SO 1.4.x produced very good sound.  Maybe psycho, 1.4.3 makes even better sound (or my new i2s cable break-in progresses).  Please take care and I hope you get a good life.

Thanks HK for your support.. My life is pretty good really - I don't think a lot of people in Australia can afford to do what I can do - to work on a passion for 3 months straight.

If you're using cset (cpu shield), 1.4.3 is more robust now as older versions of 1.4.x series don't always work. Move to Qt (instead of Golang) does seem to be the right move..

Been out of the snakeoil loop for a while. But I had to rebuild my machine as it more or less stopped working due to old ubuntu...anyway, please to report that my upgrade worked perfectly via CLI.

Great work AK. I can see lots of effort from your end !

Look, I found that, after Updating OS thru WebUI, no matter if there is something updated or not, the WebUi will restart (please refer to attached screen cap). 
Is that a new feature? Big Grin

Yes, that is a change in 1.4.3. This is to fix the problem of "no active ticket" issue if there is an update in the API backend. Also with the changes made in the API backend since 1.4.2, it's a good idea to restart anyway.

Did thought of adding some smarts to only restart if  there are relevant updates, but in the end that will spend too much time with very little benefits so I just make it simple and always restart.  Big Grin

Idea is if you look at the dash board and see there is an update, you can go into the system and click on "Update OS", otherwise you don't click on it.

Future versions of Snakeoil will allow you to:
  1. Specify a fixed version (hold Snakooil). i.e. if you choose to hold 1.4.3, but there is a newer version available, updating the OS will not upgrade Snakeoil to this latest version
  2. And with above, if you decide to keep to a specific version, it will show you a list of versions.
  3. Same idea applies to the snakeoil players. so you can use an old version of snakeoil, but with a newer version of snakeoil-players... 
May start work on this next week. For now I'm just cleaning up my resume and applying for jobs. Now is really the worst time to be job hunting.

Me too - exactly the same - just diving back in now I have a fully working system again (or so I think). Fantastic work AK.
