Missing ethernet driver in 1.1.0 - Bromf - 30-May-2020 Hi AK... Back in Jan 2017 I posted how Snakeoil 1.0.0 had installed without problems to my HP t520 Thinclient. https://www.snakeoil-os.net/forums/Thread-Thinclient-install-working-just-great?pid=586#pid586 I've simply upgraded the firmware at each prompt from then until now. However, I purchased 2 x HP t620 Thinclients this week. Hardware and specs are the same as the t520 above but with some onboard audio options. Note both models have exactly the same networking hardware. Anticipating their arrival I repurposed my old t520 as an Open-media-vault NAS overwriting Snakeoil. The t620 arrived, I updated the bios, downloaded Snakeoil iso 1.1.0 and tried to install it. It failed to write grub and then the installer crashed. Suspecting a corrupt download I re-downloaded and burnt a new disk... same failure to install. That's when I looked at the back and noticed no lights on the ethernet connection...strange... then a thought... I downloaded and burnt the 1.0.0 iso and bingo! lights on and installed no problems. So..it would appear that the 1.1.0 iso is missing ethernet driver r8169 for chip RTL 8111/8168/8411 Firmware rtl8168g-2_0.0.1 2/06/13 (details found from a running Ubuntu 20.04 desktop via USB stick. ) Any chance of updating the 1.1.0 iso to include it ? and to include it for the upcoming 1.2.0 ? Many thanks, Bob. I'll look into this later tonight if not tomorrow (Public holiday) and I'll let you know.. Apologies. Things are really hectic, hopefully from next month onwards I can finally dedicate more time and love on this project. ![]() RE: Missing ethernet driver in 1.1.0 - Bromf - 31-May-2020 (31-May-2020, 01:02 PM)agent_kith Wrote:No hurry...I have a working Snakeoil on the hardware.. just giving a heads up in case others were having the same errors...(30-May-2020, 09:39 AM)Bromf Wrote: Any chance of updating the 1.1.0 iso to include it ? and to include it for the upcoming 1.2.0 ?Apologies for the late notice. Can you: 1. create one USB with 1.0.0, and the other with 1.1.0. 2. Copy out \casper\vmlinuz and \casper\initrd.img of 1.0.0 3. Copy the two files above to the same folder in the 1.1.0 USB Now boot up the 2nd ISO. Does it work then? Can you: Installed 1.1.0 ! Thanks AK ! I will be listening tomorrow night. 2 quick questions... I may be recalling wrongly though at some point I thought you had rebuilt Snakeoil using 18.04 base ?? this install shows 16.04 ... EDIT..found the instructions for manual upgrade and running now... :-) That completed well and afterwards the only glitch was having to install missing cifs-utils. And having just set up an OMV NAS (using samba) I find that I need to replace the ip address in Snakeoil sources each time I boot the NAS. My Ubuntu desktop pc adapts to each new ip from the NAS but Snakeoil only looks for the last one. ? Perhaps I should give the NAS a reserved address or is there some way to have Snakeoil resolve the hostname ? I am going to skip 18.04 and move straight onto 20.04 for 1.2.0 (02-Jun-2020, 06:27 AM)Bromf Wrote: And having just set up an OMV NAS (using samba) I find that I need to replace the ip address in Snakeoil sources each time I boot the NAS.You can set a hostname if your router supports it. But to reduce latency, it is better to set a reserved IP address on your router to assign to your Snakeoil machine. That way it will reduce name lookups when using the shared folder. (The lookups will be cached on the local computer, but it's still going to be a round about way compared to direct IP addressing). RE: Missing ethernet driver in 1.1.0 - Bromf - 02-Jun-2020 Listening to 18.04.4 vs 16.04... I would want the sound stage , depth, and lower piano register of 18.04 with the immediacy, attack and life of 16.04. As I listen to many stringed instruments I will reinstall 16.04 but look forward to 20.04 !! :-) I will set a reserved IP address on my router to assign to Snakeoil. Thanks for the confirmation ! The user interaction latency of this operating system is superb. Hopefully I can get a beta disk out soon.
