So you mean the content also can't be migrated? Hell Yes

As far as I can tell it cannot be done easily. Even though there are import scripts that supposedly can do this.

Other than @"hkphantomgtr" content, and perhaps a few, more recent showcases and testimonials, there is not much content to migrate. So, let's bite the bullet soon...

Discourse while it looks very different, have some very good advantages:
  1. Chat built in. I might be able to hook this up to a AI chat bot that can help users with some basic Snakeoil questions (I'm still trying to set this up)
  2. Better integration with deployments. Any time I create an issue or a merge request, this can be posted into the forums for comments. Automate (hopefully) software release posts. and more.
Need more time to explore before a decision is made.

So I have been playing around Discourse for a bit, and it's really great from the administrative point of view - very easy to maintain, and I can see myself saving a lot of time.

Chances are I will just make a hardswitch without migrating this existing forums over. So users who have signed in to this forum will have to start from scratch on the new one.

And this website will be locked and the resources will be freed after 6 months.

In many ways this is a reset. New way of how Snakeoil is installed, new blog, and thus a new community.

Hope you guys are ok with this, as this means I can spend less time on infrastrcture, and focus more on snakeoil development.

I'll have a look and see whether some content can be on wiki. Suggestions welcome...

I am all for it, especially the part to focus on SO development!

Had a look at the forum, and I agree there is no need to migrate:
  • Walkthroughs: you can recreate your important posts
  • tweaks: only 2 recent ones that @"hkphantomgtr" and I can repost
  • Testimonials: I can repost Euphony post
  • Showcases: @"uglymusic" @"petemac110" can repost theirs please, @"hkphantomgtr" can do one for his super Pi setup and I will write up one, never done one !  [Image: embarrassed4.gif]
So, the way is clear to change over when you are ready...

BTW, just found out discourse looks to have a "cleaner" documentation system. Take a look of it here. Might not be worth re-migrating things over now, but something to consider in the future. And that might be great because it will be a "unified" system - i.e. forum members and document writers only need 1 user account instead of 2.

For the most part the new Discourse forum will be google ad free (Only the buymeacoffee button will be there). The blog system (Based on Drupal) will be the only place for ads.

RE: Android Firefox issues with forum - agent_kith - 03-Jun-2025

So I updated this forum software and things were broken for a few hours. Big Grin

There is never a good time to migrate, so might as well do it the hard way. New site is now live, at https://community.snakeoil-os.net.

@"Snoopy8" @"Bromf" Would appreciate if you guys can sign up to the new community and let me know. Will need to set you guys back up as forum moderators.

New community software (discourse) looks to be better at managing spam automatically tough so that's a good thing.

Unsure how many active users are really using Snakeoil, but I guess will find out after this hard migration. It's a good thing to find out the user base really, and that will give me a good idea on how much more (or less) time I can dedicate on this project.

With this new community out of the way I will be back mostly on working on the 1.4.4, and also on a automation script to install Ubuntu and Snakeoil OS.

Have registered on new community but not getting email (& have checked spam)...

And might as well migrate the Wiki after the forum is running...
